After decades of establishing their diets weight loss method on the rule that calories are just calories, Weight Watchers adjusted their view with the caveat that not all calories are equal. To get a better picture of the implication in this shift, it helps to know some history of Weight Watchers’ approach to diets weight loss.
Weight Watchers’ base method involves tracking your food weight, keeping track of calories using recipes and guide books, and going to support groups to keep you on task. Largely, the revised rules Weight Watchers has adopted won’t change that basic formula. The newer plan still assigns point values to a particular food item and then dictates the number of points you are allowed based on your height, your age and your weight. The essential difference comes in the specific point values assigned to the various foods. Formerly, a 100 calorie piece of fruit held the exact point value as a hundred calorie piece of candy, now that same apple has a lower point value and the piece of candy holds higher point value.
This means that the Weight Watchers plan is finally paying attention to the toxic and nutritional value of food ingredients. The newer point plan favors foods that feature bountiful quantities of protein or fiber and penalizes carbohydrate-rich foods by assigning higher point values.
