What Can A SEO Web Site Promotion Do For You?

SEO stands for search engine optimization and if you have a website that is selling services, then this is what you want for your website. You want your website to appear at the top of engine results pages whenever someone types in a specific keyword, SEO web site promotions can help you get there. Studies prove that being at the top of search engine pages get a much better return on their investment compared to traditional forms of advertising. It is said by others that SEO web site promotion is the only “fool proof method’ to guaranteed the top 10 placement on the page. Search engines use two types of listings, those that are paid for, usually by sponsored links, the other is organic. Organic search engines listings are those that appear down the middle of the page. Spider-driven search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN use “robots or crawlers” to score websites across the Internet. Robots will spider or crawl over each site and keep a tally of pages based on how pertinent they are. Your website placement within any spider driven search engine comes from many variables such as link popularity, density and frequency of keywords in page content, HTML code, site themeing along with more things that are too many to count here. You want your website positioned well among the major search engines and a SEO web site promotion can do this for you.

The two most influential SEO web site promotion factors you can use to help your website are Link Popularity and Page Content. Link Popularity: Google’s database currently has about 4 million pages making it the most popular spider-driven search engine on the Internet today. When Google spiders the Web, it finds sites by traveling through links and the more sites that link to you, the more important these search engines believe your content to be. So your focus should be on getting as many important sites that you can to link to your site, and the more hits your site get, the more sales you can make, if that is what your website is about. There are many ways to do this: exchange links with business partners and industry related sites, submit to online directories, or participate in Link Building . Page Content: The search engine spiders only spider through text and will use the content on your site to determine what your site is all about and this will help decide how popular your site will be ranked for specific keyword phrases when someone types them into a search engine. This is why keyword research is so important to obtaining top search engine placement. In order to get the top spot in search results, your going to need to know how many people are looking for your keyword phrases and also to see what kind of competition you are facing while trying to get a top spot in the search results. A SEO web site promotion may be the best thing that can happen to your website, so why wouldn’t you want it?

The First Reality TV Show – in 1952

Reality television shows have been a craze for the past few years. You
may not realize that the first reality tv show was first aired in the 1950s. It
featured a band leader and his family. The show actually started on the radio
and was a husband and wife affair. The children were brought in and later, after
it had transferred to tv, the kids grew up, got married and their wives were
also in the show.

It was called The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and had its
roots in a spot on a radio show in 1935 and lasted 31 years until it ended its
tv run in 1966.

Oswald Nelson was born in 1906 in New Jersey. He studied law at Rutgers
University and was also a keen musician. To help pay the fees, he was a
part-time football coach. He also was in a band, playing saxophone. In time, he
learned to play most of the band’s instruments.

When the depression hit in late 1929, Oswald realized that there was no
guarantee of a job at the end of his studies. He enjoyed playing in the band and
as this was a proven source of income, he decided to form his own band and try
his luck.

The Ozzie Nelson Band had moderate success playing lowly clubs around New York and the
East Coast. When a competition was run by the New York Daily Mirror for
readers to vote for their favorite band, he and the band obtained hundreds of
unsold newspapers and sent in votes for themselves. When they won the
competition the publicity spurred them into a bigger league and they could at
least scrape a living. Oswald recruited beautiful 23 year old vaudeville
showgirl Harriet Hilliard
as lead singer in 1932. They soon fell in love and were married within three
years.

Their big break came when they were booked at the Glen Island Casino.
Their performance was broadcast on national radio. In those days radio was as
big as tv is today and this exposure led to their first big hit And then Some
along with regular spots on The Baker’s Broadcast
radio show from 1935. They were then recruited to do regular spots on another
popular radio show, The Red Skelton Show.

In 1936 Harriet gave birth to their first son, David, followed in 1940 by
brother Eric, later known as Ricky.

Ozzie and Harriet were increasingly inserting comedy skits between musical
numbers, and this seemingly spontaneous repartee went down well with the
audience. These were basically skits based around the couple’s family life. When
Red Skelton was drafted in 1944, Ozzie and Harriet were offered the vacated
timeslot and filled it with The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Oswald
decided to major on the comedy scripting, with the music taking second place. In
time, the music was dropped altogether with the scripts being penned by Oswald.
The subject was once again their own family life including their two sons,
played by actors.

By 1949 the actors were replaced by the real David and Ricky, largely as a
result from pressure from the boys themselves and a guest appearance by Bing
Crosby who brought his own two sons along to appear in the show. If Bing’s kids
could do it, then so could Ozzie’s kids.

In 1952 the show was premiered on ABC television. By now David was 16 and
Ricky was 12. The theme continued to be the family. Many of the comedy script
ideas came from incidents that actually occurred in the Nelson household. If the
boys took up a hobby, that would be featured. When David and later Ricky started
dating girls this was also included and became a regular theme.

By the time he was 17, Ricky began to take an interest in the new rock ‘n’
roll music that had taken hold of so many of his generation. He once dated a
girl who swooned over Elvis Presley. Not wishing to be outdone, Ricky told her
that he was cutting his own disc, a fact that had absolutely no foundation.
Wishing to turn this white lie into reality he asked his father to pull some
strings. By 1957, Ricky had a recording deal and released Fat’s Domino’s song I’m
Walking
. Ozzie duly produced a special script of The Adventures of
Ozzie and Harriet
that would feature the new song. A few years back this may
not have had any great effect, but by the late 1950’s television was rapidly
being taken up across the country and I’m Walkin’ became a big hit. Ricky
was an overnight pop idol. Oswald soon realised that the tv show was a perfect
way to promote Ricky’s records and that the show would attract more viewers,
especially teenagers. From this point onwards, Ricky’s songs would feature in
many of the episodes. When they couldn’t be incorporated into the script, a song
performance by Ricky would simply be tacked on to the end of an episode.

When the boys finally married – David to June Blair in 1961 and Ricky to
Kristin Harmon in 1964 – the art-imitates-life theme was taken to new heights
when the wives were cast in the show to play themselves.

Had The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet not been cancelled in 1966,
maybe the show would still be playing with Ozzie and Harriet’s grandchildren
taking up the baton. What was striking was the way that the scripts, all written
or supervised by Oswald, paralleled their real life so closely.

When Ozzie and Harriet cracked their first joke on stage together back in the
1930’s, little did they know that this would lead to one of the longest running
shows on tv and the grand-daddy of today’s reality tv.

Wind Turbines – Hardvest the Wind

Wind is produced from the uneven heating of the atmosphere and irregularities in the earth’s surface. The air movement between these areas is what we refer to as wind. Just as we can use flowing water to turn turbines, we can harness the power of the wind with wind turbines to create electricity.

Wind turbines have been in use since the 1920s. Their earliest use was to provide electricity in remote areas that didn’t have access to a large utility company. Today there are fewer areas that are “off the grid” but wind power can now be used to supplement traditional power sources.

Wind turbines can be used individually to provide power for a household, or they can be used in arrays to provide electricity on a large scale. These arrays of industrial sized turbines are called “wind farms” and are usually situated in areas that receive consistent strong winds. Coastal areas, hilltops, and mountain passes are common areas for wind farms.

Thanks to advances in wind turbine technology we are now able to use the wind as an affordable alternative to fossil fuel for producing power. New technologies make turbines more efficient and modern production techniques bring the cost of turbines down.

When used as a supplement for residential electricity, wind turbines are connected to the breaker box provided by the power company. The power produced is available for immediate consumption, and if the wind turbine produces more electricity than is needed the excess is fed back into the utility grid for a credit on the homeowners power bill.

For those interested in living “off the grid” wind power can be used in conjunction with other alternative energy sources such as solar power. These two methods of producing electricity complement each other, when the sun is strong, the wind may be low, and the wind may be stronger on cloudy days.

Also, since solar power is not produced at night, a wind turbine can provide the electricity at this time.

Our site provides more in depth information wind energy and the other sustainable energy sources, howto’s and downloadable building plans.

5 Factors of Selling a Home

There are five major factors to consider when selling a home. These factors will greatly influence not only the final price you will get for the property, but also how quickly it will sell and how much grief you will suffer through the sale.

Location

Over history it’s been said the three things to look for in buying a property are (1) Location, (2) Location, and (3) Location. There are positive and negative factors to almost every location. Let’s pretend your property is right next door to a fire station. You need the kind of marketing professional that can sell the benefits of not having to worry about your new home burning down, or perhaps the savings on fire insurance. Seriously, no matter where your property may be located, there is a ready, willing, and able buyer in the marketplace. The “problems” with the location of a property can be overcome, you just need a Realtor who will work hard to do so.

Your Realtor and his/her Company

Not all Realtors are the same. We each take different approaches to the marketing of your home. These range from as basic as placing the home on the MLS system and hoping it will sell, to Realtors who actively market the home through newspaper advertising and the Internet. You will likely have a positive Real Estate experience if you pick a Realtor who meets the following criteria:

  • Personality. It’s hard to work with an agent you don’t like. You won’t trust him/her, and the entire experience will be a difficult one. You have enough on your mind without having to argue and bicker with your agent. No matter how good an agent is… if you don’t like each other, then it won’t be a good experience.
  • Availability. Having a full time Realtor (or a team of them) is vital to the successful sale of your home. If your Realtor isn’t available to sell your house because he/she’s “working a day job”, then how committed is that Realtor to you?
  • Work Ethic. Just like any other professional in your life, you need a Realtor who is organized, professional, and hard working. Have you ever seen a lawyer show up for a case in sweat pants and a t-shirt? Or a doctor say; “I’m sorry, I can’t deliver your baby because I have a 4:00 t-off time”? How about an accountant who can’t manage his own finances? You should be able to expect the same level of professionalism from the agent you choose to represent you.

By having a professional Realtor working on your behalf, your entire experience will be more positive.

Terms

Are you flexible on possession dates? Is your property easy to show? Are you prepared to negotiate on appliances or other chattels? This flexibility makes your home much more attractive to potential buyers. For example, many out-of-town buyers won’t even consider a home if the possession is not flexible. First time home buyers often have to purchase the appliances with the home because they have to put all of their savings into the down payment. Where are they going to get $3000 to buy appliances?

Condition

Making a good first impression is important in getting a property sold. Painting the front door and trim, making sure the doorbell works, putting furniture and clothing in storage, and cleaning off counter tops and fridges are just a few of the little things that can be done to make properties more marketable. Just remember, cleanliness and pride of ownership will get you more money than used dirt.

Price

Determining a price is more than just picking a number. It involves careful analysis of the property. Many things come into account when determining a price. In fact, it is often through price where short comings in the other factors are balanced. For instance, if your home has been damaged from bad renters, is difficult to gain access to, is right next door to a “drug-den”, and is located between the city dump and the airport, then the home will have to be priced accordingly. But watch out, while the price can fix almost every short coming, it’s not always the best solution.

Having a Realtor who will be honest with you about these factors is important, and could save you several thousand dollars.

Foot Massage

Foot massage or foot reflexology has a Chinese origin. It dates back to more than 3,000 years ago and is used in the prevention and cure of many health ailments.

Some in fact say, foot massage dates back to ancient Eygyptian times due to archaeological findings in cave drawings in Egypt.

The principle of foot massage rests in the premise that the meridian network connects all tissues, organs and cells in our body. Each organ in the body is connected to a specific reflex point on the foot through the intermediary of 300 nerves. A trained foot reflexologist can put pressure on different meridians or energy lines on the sole and side of the feet to determine the cause of illness.

By using pressure to these the reflex points, the foot massage is good for stimulating the activity internal organs, and to improve blood and lymph circulation. Thus, the top to bottom well being of a person can be made through the foot.

The principles of foot massage is not in congruence with western allopathic medicine. Western medicine merely sees the foot as a body part comprising of bones, ligaments and joints.

However, foot massage is fast gaining much popularity and acceptance as an alternative health treatment. Fans of foot massage believe it can cure not only colds and minor ailments, but more serious ailments as well. These ailments include liver dysfunction, constipation problems, chronic headaches, skin allergies, etc.

Like most Oriental medical techniques, foot reflexology is a “holistic” treatment. It concentrates on treating the whole person rather than just the symptoms of one particular ailment.

While Western medicine promises speedy recovery of all unpleasant symptoms, foot massage therapy can be slow and gradual. A series of visits is necessary to strengthen the body and to bring the body back to balance.

A session of foot reflexology in San Francisco, can set you back as much as US$40-100. Thus, foot massages over a period of time, can add up in terms of costs.

However, for practitioners and believers of foot massage, the cost for good health is well worth it. The alternative would have been money spent in clinics and western hospitals for prescription drugs and perhaps, invasive surgery.

Caroline Colby is a publisher of information on Massage Therapy. She highly promotes Massage Therapy as a safe, holistic and effective alternative health therapy. For free articles, tips and news updates, please visit her site at www.massage-therapy-central.com.

Managing the Corporate Brand – a Reputation Perspective

Adored, respected and coveted by customers and organisations alike, corporate brands represent one of the most fascinating phenomena of the business environment in the 21st century. Their importance is unquestionable. Brands, in their various forms, are integral to our everyday existence. This is particularly the case at the organisational level where the concept of the corporate brand now enjoys wide currency in business parlance. There is an increasing realisation that corporate brands serve as a powerful navigational tool to a variety of stakeholders for a lot of purposes, including employment, investment and, most importantly, consumer buying behaviour.

Corporate branding has been defined by Van Riel (2001, p. 12) as:
“a systematically planned and implemented process of creating and maintaining a favourable reputation of the company with its constituent elements, by sending signals to stakeholders using the corporate brand.”

Creating a coherent perception of a company in the minds of its various stakeholders is a major challenge faced by many companies. Particularly in large multinational corporations speaking with one voice is a challenging task. Especially when grown through extensive merger and acquisition activities, large companies often comprise multiple subsidiaries and subsequently multiple brands and cultures. Managing the signals these diverse corporate subsets send out to their stakeholders is often impeded by various aspects such as historic turf wars between divisions, cultural and language differences, deficient management structures and unclear responsibilities, or simply by spatial separation. Furthermore, incoherence in messages and difficulties in coordination are often fostered by communication representatives’ narrow focus on their particular stakeholder groups.

For example, investor relations representatives only have a small community of investors in mind. Those responsible for a certain product brand focus on their particular customer base and the internal communicators primarily see their recipients, the employees. Such thinking in a box and acting in narrow realms of stakeholder groups often leads to the communication of messages that might be suitable for each individual stakeholder group, yet all in all the picture drawn of the company as a whole is blurred or even contradictory.

This article asserts that a stronger integration of the different internal units responsible for stakeholder relations is needed in order to foster more coherencies in messaging and to eventually generate a coherent corporate brand image and favourable corporate reputation. The management process of creating and maintaining a coherent corporate brand image in the minds of each individual stakeholder which is the basis for a favourable overall corporate reputation shall be labelled corporate branding.

The importance of corporate brands has been ignored in the literature for a very long time. It was only during the 1990’s when branding and communications consultants went on to assess what is called as a ‘corporate brand’ (King, 1991). Writers about a few decades ago always focused on the importance of a ‘company brand’ rather than a ‘corporate brand’. However, there is an overarching explanation as to why there has been a growth in the importance of studying a ‘corporate’ rather than a ‘company’ brand. Some of the early academic work in the area of corporate brands reached a broadly similar set of beliefs. The importance of staff in corporate brand building was emphasised, as was culture. The role of the chief executive as brand manager was also stressed. Balmer (1995) also said that the new millennium would witness increased importance being assigned to the corporate brand. It can also be found in academic literature that marketing scholars have largely ignored the challenges presented by corporate brand management.

The reasons for this short sightedness can be seen in a lot of branding and marketing textbooks, which though acknowledge the importance of corporate brands but fail to highlight the following attributes:

* corporate brands have a wider scope and management as compared to product brands;

* corporate brands have multi-stakeholders rather than customer orientation and

* the traditional marketing framework is not sufficient when one is studying a brand at a corporate level

Most of us today fail to understand the difference between what is and what is not a corporate brand. Brands such as McDonalds, British Airways, Vodafone, Virgin and Manchester United are examples of organisations with clear corporate brands. However, in the case of Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Diageo, it is more the product brands that have a clear recognition as compared to the corporate brand. In such cases organisations face a lot of difficulties in building their corporate brand because of their stronger focus on building their product brand portfolio. A corporate brand may be viewed as a contract in that the company needs to articulate its accord with its key stakeholders by demonstrating, unceasingly and over time that it has kept true to its corporate branding pledge. As such, the brand name and/or logo play an important part in creating awareness and recognition but also as ’signs’ of assurance. However, a number of authorities have cautioned against seeing branding as a one-way process that affects the image of those engaged in some form of branding partnership such as customers and employees. This is because these groups also have a key role in defining a brand’s image (Johansson and Hirano, 1999).

The relationship of corporate reputation to the success of a brand

Corporate Reputation has never been considered so important than it is today. In the recent years it is not just the markets which have nose dived in the corporate world but it is the corporations themselves. Scandals such as that of Enron and WorldCom have seriously hampered the trust among stakeholder groups and widespread public scepticism about company ethics. If we look at the case of Andersen, the major reason why the company ceases to exist is because of the negative reputation that built up over a short period of time. Since the mid-1980s senior managers have recognised the strategic necessity of building and sustaining a favourable corporate reputation to create corporate competitive advantage. This recognition has been reflected by a wealth of academic publications that have highlighted the value of a favourable corporate reputation as a means of enhancing an organisation’s financial value, influencing intention to buy, acting as a mechanism for assuring product/ service quality, influencing customer and employee loyalty, and offering inimitability to the organisation. Authors over the years have also recognised that an organisation’s corporate reputation is affected by the actions of every business unit, department and employee that comes into contact with another stakeholder.

Reputation is a concept more generally known to us as how an organisation lives up to the expectations of its stakeholders. A firm with a good overall reputation owns a valuable asset ‘goodwill’: brand names, corporate logos and customer loyalty. Brands in general are used by the consumers as a symbolic meaning in their recognition and decision making process. Often brands develop a ‘personality’ of their own that has an effect on whether users decide the product’s image is consistent with their needs. With this ‘personality’ often goes a reputation as well. Brand names can often be repositories for a firm’s reputation: high quality performance on one product can often be transferred to another product via the brand name.

For a firm expanding its product line, a well-known brand name can be advantageous in facilitating user acceptance of the new product because of its existing brand reputation. Family branding, that is a company placing the same brand name on all products in a product line, enjoys the distinct advantage of instant recognition, benefiting from the “halo effect” of the brand’s established reputation. This leveraging effect has led some firms to enter new fields under the same name – brand franchise extension. The advantages of such an approach are the facilitation of the adoption process and acceptance of new products, since users assume new products have the same quality level as existing ones; a minimal cost of branding to the manufacturer, extensive advertising for brand name awareness and preference will not be necessary; and user response will tend to be faster, thereby reducing the introduction stage in the product life cycle where profits are negative.

In addition, another advantage often obtained is the greater ease in gaining distribution (particularly shelf space) due to its familiar name. While the reputation of the established brand name can facilitate the introduction of a new product, any problems with the new product can, conversely, affect the saleability of all items bearing the same name. If consistency in new product quality is not maintained, user dissatisfaction may result which may carry over to older, successful brands in the line. Family branding, therefore, places high demands on quality control because every single item is considered representative of the entire line. A lower quality item may hurt sales of the better quality products. Promotion of a better quality product may result in credibility gaps among potential buyers. A new product failure may well tarnish the reputation of sister products carrying the same brand name. One bad egg may well spoil the entire basket.

Reputation is thus the assessment of the continuous sustainability over time of an attribute of an entity. This assessment is based on the entity’s willingness and ability to perform repeatedly an activity in a similar fashion. Reputation is an aggregate composite of all previous transactions over the life of the entity, a historical notion, and requires consistency of an entity’s actions over a prolonged time for its formation. A firm will lose its reputation if it repeatedly fails to fulfil its stated intentions. Having a good reputation also insures high quality firms will be larger and have more customers since fewer customers will depart from high quality firms in the long run and more will arrive because of word-of mouth activity from other customers. Thus, to become successful and hence profitable, brands must develop a positive reputation.

Spyware The Enemy To You And Your Computer

There is a good chance that if you are actively online with your computer system that in some way spyware will get installed. All it takes is just clicking on the wrong site or by signing up for some web programs. Pretty much everyday there is a new form of spyware that has been created by someone or some company that is seeking information. Also with the easy availability of high speed internet services it has made the spread of spyware even faster and easier.

Spyware was originally designed to monitor and transmit back information to its “home” or creator without the user’s knowledge sometimes. This data would used to send back advertising ads usually popup to your computer. Over time spyware has changed and grown and now it has four biggest types of “malicious software” and threat to computers worldwide along with viruses, Trojans and worms.

So what are the major dangers with spyware running in the back ground on your computer system?
To start spyware can cripple your computer and slow your computer to a crawl this is due to the way installs itself and configured to start whenever you boot up your computer system and runs all the time. The spyware steals both your computer resources and also your computer internet bandwidth. If network with multiple computers like a small business or home based business then the infected system with spyware can cause the over all network to slow down.

Another issue with spyware is the danger of invasion of privacy. Remember that these programs can collect all types of data from you computer system and then send back to its creator. Spyware usually collects information that can be used for advertising, marketing to see what websites you visit on a frequent bases. However there is a always that potential to user spyware to collect personal information such as financial, credit card and personal ID the purpose of identity thief or to gain access to those accounts along with email accounts and address books for spam purposes.

The latest way to infest you computer system have gotten even worse by using a bot net. This is where a computer or group of computers with a bot or “robot” software that works together to launch attacks on other computers to infect them with spyware. These bot nets currently focus more installing spyware programs on targeted victim computers.

Some of the most common forms of spyware are Bargain Buddy, Gain, b3b projector, Gator, n-Case, SaveNow, Search Toolbar, Webhancer and Search Assistant. These are just some the current spyware out today which can be difficult to uninstall toolbars to hijackers that take over you home page and pop-up windows generators.

Promoters of spyware or Adware say that they are doing nothing wrong because in some cases you agree to the terms of the service or EULA which states that you will provide this information to these companies.

Usually spyware will store files on your computer from a few cookies to .dll files and registry entries installed on your computer. Spyware is like another type of programs on your computer and when they run it used your computers systems memory and processor to keep it running which ties up valuable system resources on your computer.

Although some people may not mind generating data for these companies but even if it is the friendliest type of spyware these types of programs can lead to issue and can even compromise the computer security.

In my experience as an IT professional that on some systems that are so infected with spyware the only way to get the computer running normally was to completely reinstall the operating system because if a system is that impacted it takes hours and hours to remove the spyware and even then some of the worse types might still be on the computer.

Spyware along with other malicious software can cause serious issues and problems with how your computer operates and although there are some spyware removal program that you can run that will help protect and remove these types of programs. A couple of programs that I recommend are Ad-Aware from Lava Soft and Spyware Doctor 3.2 from PC tools. But even with these programs I always recommend the full backup of your computer system because there are still other malicious software program and hardware issue such as hard drive failures that can occur. By running regular backups on your computer system you ensure the protection of your data.

In conclusion spyware on your computer can be a lot of trouble for the person computer or if you operate a small business or home office. The best idea is to keep your computer system free of spyware and to run software protection just incase your computer is imfected.

How Spammers Fool Rule-based and Signature-Based Spam Filters

Effectively stopping spam over the long-term requires much more than blocking individual IP addresses and creating rules based on keywords that spammers typically use. The increasing sophistication of spam tools coupled with the increasing number of spammers in the wild has created a hyper-evolution in the variety and volume of spam. The old ways of blocking the bad guys just don’t work anymore.

Examining spam and spam-blocking technology can illuminate how this evolution is taking place and what can be done to combat spam and reclaim e-mail as the efficient, effective communication tool it was intended to be.

Heuristics (Rule-based Filtering)

One method used to combat spam is Rule-based, or Heuristic Filtering. Rule-based filters scan email content for predetermined words or phrases that may indicate a message is spam. For example, if an email administrator includes the word “sex” on a company’s rule-based list, any email containing this word will be filtered.

The major drawback of this approach is the difficulty in identifying keywords that are consistently indicative of spam. While spammers may frequently use the words “sex” and ‘Viagra” in spam emails, these words are also used in legitimate business correspondence, particularly in the healthcare industry. Additionally, spammers have learned to obfuscate suspect words by using spellings such as “S*E*X”, or “VI a a GRR A”.

It is impossible to develop dictionaries that identify every possible misspelling of “spammy” keywords. Additionally, because filtering for certain keywords produces large numbers of false positives, many organizations have found they cannot afford to rely solely on rule-based filters to identify spam.

Signature-Based Spam Filters

Another method used to combat spam is Signature-based Filtering. Signature-based filters examine the contents of known spam, usually derived from honey pots, or dummy email addresses set up specifically to collect spam. Once a honey pot receives a spam message, the content is examined and given a unique identifier. The unique identifier is obtained by assigning a value to each character in the email. Once all characters have been assigned a value, the values are totaled, creating the spam’s signature. The signature is added to a signature database and sent as a regular update to the email service’s subscribers. The signature is compared to every email coming in to the network and all matching messages are discarded as spam.

The benefit of signature-based filters is that they rarely produce false-positives, or legitimate email incorrectly identified as spam. The drawback of signature-based filters is that they are very easy to defeat. Because they are backward-looking, they only deal with spam that has already been sent. By the time the honey pot receives a spam message, the system assigns a signature, and the update is sent and installed on the subscribers’ network, the spammer has already sent millions of emails. A slight modification of the email message will render the existing signature useless.

Furthermore, spammers can easily evade signature-based filters by using special email software that adds random strings of content to the subject line and body of the email. Because the variable content alters the signature of each email sent by the spammer, signature-based spam filters are unable to match the email to known pieces of spam.

Developers of signature-based spam filters have learned to identify the tell-tale signs of automated random character generation. But as is often the case, spammers remain a step ahead and have developed more sophisticated methods for inserting random content. As a result, most spam continues to fool signature-based filters.

The Solution

When used individually, each anti-spam technique has been systematically overcome by spammers. Grandiose plans to rid the world of spam, such as charging a penny for each e-mail received or forcing servers to solve mathematical problems before delivering e-mail, have been proposed with few results. These schemes are not realistic and would require a large percentage of the population to adopt the same anti-spam method in order to be effective. EZ Trees to Plant

Whenever someone asks me for suggestions on EZ to plant trees and shrubs, I always begin with Arborvitae.

Arborvitae are commonly used evergreen shrubs or trees useful in urban areas where low maintenance and durability is needed. Many cultivars with forms such as being globed in shape, columnar, or narrow pyramidal, tend to be near buildings, doors, and walkways. Other forms which are larger are used for screens and buffers that are planted in rows. The form of arborvitae is small, medium, or large depending on the cultivar. Some reach 50′, others only 3′. Most prefer full sun to partial sun. Planting in dense shade conditions should be avoided. A moist , well drained, loamy soil in full sunlight are ideal conditions for growing healthy arborvitae. These plants will tolerate rocky, clay, urban conditions of heat drought and pollution. The most important pest we have is bagworms which must be controlled to prevent complete defoliation. Some cultivars have multiple leaders which also prove to be a detraction for the plant. Pruning out multiple leaders in some cultivars is a simple remeady. Our most popular Arborvitae is the Emerald Green arborvitae. Many people prefer to spell them Arbor Vitae . It is a bright light green color and narrow in shape. It makes a distinctive and impressive natural fence. It is easy to grow ,plant, and keep in shape.

The Hetz Midget arborvitae is a dwarf globe variety. This is a good choice for along walkways and gardens. This is a tough plant that is easy to install and not going to cost a lot. It will maintain its color in the winter and will withstand snow loads well. We carry these plants in 2 and 3 gal. pots. The prices on these dwarfs vary from $15 to $30 depending on size and quanity ordered.

Another small arborvitae that we grow in pots is the Rheingold arborvitae. This is a small globe shaped plant that has a golden green cast to it in the summer and a bronze winter color. We also have the American Arborvita known as “Tiny Tim”.This arborvita grows in zone 2 – 7. Its is a needled evergreen in the Cupressaceae Family. It will grow in height from a half a foot to 1 foot tall. Its spread will be about 1 to 1.5 feet. This is a plant that requires little work. Selecting quality arborvitae for the home landscape : When you get to the nursery or garden center where you will buy your arborvitae, pick out the healthiest, most robust plants that have no evidence of disease or insect damage. The potting medium should be moist, but not wet, and the roots should well dispersed in the medium. Arborvitae that have roots growing from the drainage holes or circling the top of the pot are less desirable. Many people choose to buy arbs from a mail order company, which is perfectly acceptable. However, realize that most woody plants purchased from mail order catalogs will be shipped dormant and bare root, that is, without any soil attached to the root system. Such plants may be smaller in size because of the expense of shipping. It is important to plant such material immediately upon arrival. Generally it is best to purchase one-year-old material from mail order companies since this material is more vigorous and will transplant better. The larger material that is offered is often composed of the less vigorous plants held over from previous years. Most large sized arbs are balled and burlaped. Don’t buy any arbs bare rooted over 3′ tall. Any plant larger should be balled and burlaped.

We have thousands of arbs and always have hundreds ready for you to pickup. From 2′ to 15′ we have inventory balled and burlaped. Don’t worry about driving long distances to get to us. We are easy to get to near Phila., on a major road, Rt. 313 in Fountainville Pa.. We want to move our stock and will make sure that you go home a happy camper. If you are coming from a long distance, we will give away free inventory that is surplus to our needs. One of our fields is being converted into ball and soccer fields and work will begin Nov. 25 2005. Stock in this field will go cheap. We will stay open til the last dog dies or we sell out. I think we have more stock than what we possibly can sell. You can see our web sites at:
